Spinoff has been accepted into Mosaic Arts International 2008, the annual show of the Society of American Mosaic Artists. Held in conjunction with SAMA's annual conference, the juried exhibition presents the best in contemporary mosaics from SAMA's diverse international membership. Mosaic Arts International 2008 will run April 3 - April 30th at the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, FL.
Sonia has been selected as the artist for the new Pleasant Grove Library by Dallas' Public Art Committee. The library is currently in the design phase. Sonia is working with the architects from Hidell and Associates, designing site specific mosaic art into the library environment. The mosaic walls at Children's Medical Center won an international Spectrum Award recognizing creativity and achievement in the use of tile in residential and commercial design. The awards are presented at Coverings each year and is sponsored by the Tile Council of America, the Association of Ceramic Tile Manufacturers of Spain, Assopiastrelle (the Italian tile association), the National Tile Contractors Association and the Ceramic Tile Dealers Association.
A film crew from the new television series "The Art of Living" filmed a segment in Sonia's studio. It is now airing on the Veria Network on Dish Network, on Channel 9575, (an HD channel).
Vertigo won an award at the recent 2007 Texas Visual Arts Association Juried Citation Exhibition and is now on it's way to the The Sum of All Parts, a nationally juried mosaic exhibition at the Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro, Oregon. The show will be open from December 4 to January 30, 2008. And Whiteout is in "An Ancient Language–A Modern Translation", an invitational exhibit of mosaic art at the Granville Arts Center in Garland, Texas. The exhibit is open through November 16th.
The March 2007 issue of Cooking Light magazine features an interview with Sonia in their 'Pursuits' column. It's all about the art of mosaic's surge in popularity and how to get started creating your first mosaic. And the current issue of Dallas' Homes & Estates features Sonia's studio.
Sonia was presented with a SAMA Service Award at the recent national conference of The Society of American Mosaic Artists in Mesa Arizona. Sonia began working on SAMA in 1998 as a founding member and began served as a member of SAMA's Board of Trustees from the formal inception of the association in 1999 till March, 2007. Sonia is a Past-President of the non-profit organization which works to promote the art of mosaics and the work of mosaic artists.

Sonia will be speaking at the big tile and stone show, Coverings, in Chicago at McCormick Place. She will be one of the panelists for the presentation "Mosaics: Rich History and Current Trends". The talk will be at 10:15 am on Thursday, April 19th. Please come by and say hello if you're visiting Coverings.
"Whiteout" won the Second Place Award in the Texas Visual Arts Association National 2005 Exhibition. Dr Ted Pillsbury, former director of the Kimbell Art Museum, selected 92 art works from 1420 entries for this all-media show that features work from many disciplines including painting, sculpture, photography and mixed media. The show was held at the Irving Arts Center.
Lots of new opportunities for mosaic workshops. Check out the General Class Info page for details about classes co-taught with Emma Biggs, classes around the country and around the world. The advanced mosaic class in the south of France was incredible! We worked in the pure light and color of Provence with a mix of glass and unglazed ceramic at the Opio factory, north of Cannes. If England is more convenient for you, Sonia will also be teaching an advanced class at West Dean College in Chichester.
The mosaic murals at Children's Medical Center of Dallas continue to attract attention. The "Nature Wall" is featured in the April/May '05 issue of American Craft magazine, the official publication of the American Craft Council. Several of the walls are also in the new book, "Mosaic Art and Style" by JoAnn Locktov. The Nature wall, one of four 8'x17' mosaic murals, was also on the cover of the September issue of Healthcare Design Magazine. Phase 2 of the Children's project is now complete: two large glass-on-frosted glass mosaics for the intensive care floors at the hospital. "Whiteout" has been accepted in the Society of American Mosaic Artists' 2005 international juried show "A More Perfect Union". It will be on view at the Ellipse Arts Center in Arlington, VA from March 18 to June 4. Sonia will be speaking at the annual conference of the Society of American Mosaic Artists in Washington DC, on the Marketing and Business Panel.
Sonia's book, Mosaic Techniques & Traditions, has gone to a third printing within eight months of its release. It has also been adopted as the textbook for the mosaics program at Oklahoma City Community College. The catalog for Prix Picassiette 2002 in Chartres, France just arrived and the cover image is Sonia's mosaic "Volcano". The international exhibition and conference is held every two years, so this is quite an honor. And "Riverscape" made the cover of another new book, The Mosaic Sourcebook.
The feature on Sonia in the Dallas Morning News House & Garden section was excellent. It included color images of some projects from the book as well as Sonia's fine art mosaics. Read the mosaic article here.
Sonia spoke at the international mosaic conference in Melbourne, Australia. The International Association of Contemporary Mosaic (AIMC) based in Ravenna, Italy meets every two years. After the conference, Sonia taught an Advanced Mosaic Class in New Zealand. Sonia also spoke at Surfaces 2005, the BIG tile show in Las Vegas. The presentation, entitled "Design Possibilities For Mosaic" was scheduled from 2 to 5 pm, January 25th at the Sands Expo & Convention Center.
The dedication of Plaza Solana at White Rock Lake was at 10 AM on Saturday, September 18, in Dallas. The Plaza features mosaic insets as well as a sign. It is located off Lawther Drive near Lakewood Blvd.
Sonia's work is featured in Piece Work: Mosaic & Assemblage by Eight Women Artists. The show opened at the Arts Festival at the Charleston Area Convention Center and is now at the Rabold Gallery in Aiken, SC from May 13 to July 31st.
The show, Outside the Lines 4 will open at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas with a reception on June 5 from 6 to 8 pm. There were 171 entries and 25 artworks accepted. Two of those pieces are Sonia's mosaics, "Mood Swing" and "Odyssey". The show remains open until June 26.
The dedication of the mosaic murals at Oklahoma City Community College on April 22nd featured Sonia as the keynote speaker.
Many, many thanks to all the members of mosaicartistsorg for sponsoring the book signing reception at the San Francisco Conference of the Society of American Mosaics Artists. Signing over 150 books proves creating mosaics makes strong hands! Mosaicsartistsorg is a Yahoo group supporting mosaic artists.
Sonia's book, Mosaic Techniques & Traditions, was featured by the Doubleday Book Club of New Zealand in the February circular. The book went to a second printing within a hundred days of its release. It has also been adopted as the textbook for the mosaics program at Oklahoma City Community College.
Sonia will be signing books and doing a mosaic demo from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, March 27th at the SMU Barnes & Noble at on Mockingbird lane just east of Central in Dallas. Please come by and say hello.
"The Sum of All Parts", an exhibition promoting mosaics as a fine art medium is at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas, TX from March 6-27, 2004. Opening reception with the artists is Sunday, March 7 from 2 to 5 PM, (when there will also be a free White Rock Rhythms jazz concert). The exhibition features an inspiring collection of artwork by modern mosaic artists. Sonia curated the show.Sonia will be featured on the Sunday Morning News show on ABC, Channel 8 in the DFW area around 8:15 am on Feb. 22. the short spot will be about outdoor mosaics. At 2pm the same day, Sonia will do a mosaic demo and book signing at the Flower & Outdoor Living Show at the Dallas Convention Center. If you're in the area, please come by.
The book signing for Mosaic Techniques & Traditions at the Barnes & Noble SMU Bookstore was a big success. It was a sell-out in the first fifteen minutes! Many thanks to those who came and my apologies to those who didn't get books.
The 2004 conference for the Society of American Mosaic Artists is in San Francisco this month at the Holiday Inn Select on Kearny Street. On Friday, January 30th, there will be a book signing reception for Mosaic Techniques & Traditions from 6 to 7:30 pm in Benton's Lounge at the hotel.

The class in Sydney, Australia was full of talented people who all created wonderful mixed-media mosaics. Pictures coming soon!

* The episode featuring Sonia on HGTV's Modern Masters will be repeated on December 28th at 6 pm ET. The television production crew spent a day in the studio filming Sonia working on a floor mosaic for the episode. Episode #806 originally aired on June 25th.
* Two of Sonia's mosaics were accepted in the Society of American Mosaic Artists' 2004 international juried show. "Mood Swing" was accepted in the Two-Dimensional category while the "Nature Wall" at Children's Medical Center was one of six mosaics accepted in the Architectural Category. The wall will be exhibited by photograph. The show, 'Opus Veritas: Fragments of Truth', will be at Museo ItaloAmericano, at Fort Mason in San Francisco from January 14th through April 4th.
* "Pool" won an award! Two new mosaics, "Pool" and "Mirage", "were selected by Dr. Ted Pillsbury, Director of Art at the Meadows Museum of Art, for the "Arts 2003 National Juried Exhibition" in Rockwall, Texas. "Pool" won second place in this all-media fine arts show.
*The Irving Arts Center presents LAY OF THE LAND: MOSAICS BY SONIA KING in the Focus Gallery, August 16 -September 28, 2003. A reception for the artist will be held Saturday, August 23 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public. Click here for a look at the show.
Sonia will be featured on "Good Morning Texas" on ABC, Channel 8 on Wednesday, August 20th. The segment is a promo for her presentation at the 14th Annual VISIONS: Womens Expo. That will take place at 4pm on the Design Stage at Market Hall in Dallas.
A new work, "After Thought", was selected for the Texas Sculpture Association's juried show 'Connections'. It will be on display at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas from August 21 to September 13, 2003.
The August/September issue of Glass Craftsman Magazine is focused on the art of mosaic. The lead story is by Sonia and features the work of contemporary mosaic artists from around the world. Here's a link to a teaser for the article but don't miss the images in the actual magazine.

Sonia has been elected President of the Society of American Mosaic Artists at the recent annual meeting. She will serve through January of 2004. For more information on the organization, visit the SAMA web site.

Sonia's upcoming book, Mosaic Techniques & Traditions: Projects and Designs from Around the World, will be published by Sterling Publishing in October, 2003. It will be a full-color, hardback book providing historical information on mosaics and mosaic-making traditions from around the world, technical instruction on the creation of mosaics and projects. The book will also feature a running gallery showcasing a variety of works by international, contemporary mosaic artists. For more info, click here.
Sonia recently spoke at the bi-annuual meeting of Associazone Internazionale Mosacisti Contemporanei (International Association of Contemporary Mosaicists) in Brazil. The topic was current trends in American Mosaic Art. Next up, Prix Picassiette in Chartres, France. Sonia will be speaking there as well as exhibiting her work.
Earth Moves has been accepted into the Texas Sculpture Association's juried exhibit Connections. Come to the artists' reception on April 6, 5:30 - 7:00 pm, at the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake. The show is up until April 20th.
Dallas Soars! A stampede of Pegasus has been unleashed across the city. And Sonia created one in mosaic. Click here to see "Flying Colors"! Underwood III, Inc. and Ohio Casualty.

Sonia's solo show, Lay of the Land, opens January 6th in the West Gallery at the Irving Center for the Arts in Jaycee Park in Irving, Texas. Lay of the Land is an exploration of the natural world in mosaic. Stone, glass, found objects and more are used to create map-like landscapes that are both familiar and unreal. Click here for a brief visit to the last show, In Back of Beyond. The reception with the artist, 2pm - 4pm on Sunday, January 6th, is open to the public. Additionally, Sonia will present a slide show on ancient and contemporary mosaics from around the world on January 22nd at 7:00 pm.

Sonia's solo show, In Back of Beyond, opens November 8th in the main gallery at the Bath House Cultural Center on White Rock Lake in Dallas, Texas. A reception with the artist will be held Sunday, November 11 from 5 to 7 pm and everyone's invited! Additionally, Sonia will present a slide show on ancient and contemporary mosaics from around the world on November 17 at 7:30 pm.
Upcoming shows include the TVAA Juried Citation Show at San Jacinto Tower and the Texas Sculpture Association Show, Metamorphosis, at the Ice House in Oak Cliff.
Sonia has work in several current exhibitions. "Primeval" can be seen at the Bath House Cutural Center Invitational Retrospective from August 9 - 25. "Masterplan" is at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary's members invitational show: W. And several pieces are part of the show "By Hand" at the Performing Arts Center of Garland From July 30 - September 2. The spring show season begins! Sonia's art mosaics have been accepted into both the Plano Art Association 2001 National Juried Exhibition and the Richardson Civic Art Society 35th Annual Regional Juried Show. Openings are April 7th and April 20th, respectively. Sonia is also included in the invitational show "Elemental" at the Bath House Cultural Center which opens on April 21.
The opening of Sonia's newest installation of a very unusual mosaic floor was a big success. It's a tape (yes, tape!) mosaic on the floor at the Dallas Visual Art Center. Click here to see "The Outer Limits" as a work in progress and the finished installation.
Over 80 people attended Sonia's lecture and slide show at the Dallas Visual Art Center on Tuesday, March 20th. The topic was 'The Art of Mosaics', covering both historical and contemporary mosaics.
The opening of 'El Corazon' at the Bath House Cultural Center will be on Saturday, February 3rd from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Sonia will be exhibiting a new piece "Faint of Heart" at the show. Austin's premier Tejano band 'Conjunto Aztalan' will be playing at 7:30pm. The exhibition opens on February 2nd and runs through February 17th.
Sonia's lecture and slide presentation at the Dallas Visual Art Center in December was very well received. The topic was 'The Art of Mosaics'. The lecture and slide show covered both historical and contemporary mosaics.
Sonia is honored to have been granted membrship in the Associazone Internazionale Mosacisti Contemporanei (International Association of Contemporary Mosaicists) in Ravenna, Italy. This organization's members are professional mosaicists from more than thirty countries around the world.
Sonia will be exhibiting at the Congress of the International Association of Contemporary Mosaicists in Ravenna, Italy. On the way home she will be speaking on current trends in American mosaic art at the annual meeting of the British Association for Modern Mosaics in London.
Additionally, three of Sonia's pieces have been accepted into two nationally juried shows - one by the Collage Artists of America Open 2000 in California and two at the Texas Artists Museum National.
